Isaac H. Grainger & Son Ltd. is a long established family company bridging five generations. The company was started in 1864 by Stephen Grainger, hand forging tube fittings in a small smithy at the bottom of the garden in Northfield Road, Netherton. Isaac was born in 1866 and was later to give his name to the company. William Arthur his son was born in 1890 and followed on into the business with his sister Frances May. The family moved to Baptist End Works just before the turn of the 20th.Century. During this early period the principle activity was the hand forging of tube fittings with some eight blacksmiths fires the blast for which was provided by a 10hp gas engine driven fan. The 1920·s depression saw the introduction of finishing and screwing machines for facing & tapping the forgings and cutting & threading tube. This broadened the customer base to engineers and plumbers merchants. Isaac died in 1931 when ownership of the company passed to his widow Mary and was run by Arthur and May. More tube screwing and bending machinery was introduced towards the end of the Second World War. Due to the lack of hand forging skills the forged fitting side of the business gradually reduced and was finally discontinued shortly after the war. In 1952 Mary handed over the business to Arthur and May when the title became Isaac H. Grainger & Son.
The firm was made into a Limited Company in 1956 shortly after Neville, the present Managing Director, joined. The company continued to grow slowly. Neville·s sons Ivan and Robin joined the company after leaving school in 1979 and 1982 respectively. In the early 80·s the company was restructured specialising in tubular allthread and products made from it. This introduced the company to the manufacture of pedestals for the computer floor industry. With a healthy growth during the 1990·s production at Baptist End Works developed substantially and the opportunity arose to enable the Company to move to bigger and better premises. So after 100 years at Baptist End the move was made to Century Works in Gawne Lane, some 1 mile away and only ˝ mile from the original site in Northfield Road. The company has continued to grow, the main output being Floor Pedestals but still retaining a useful production in the traditional tube fitting industry.
The current Directors are Neville (Managing Director), Janet (Secretary), Ivan (Sales Director) and Robin (Works Director). The closely integrated management team enable a first class customer relationship based on prompt and personal attention with deliveries second to none, backed up by solid products based on sound engineering expertise. Our Company policy is one of continual development striving to produce the best possible product at an acceptable cost, through the optimum use of the labour, materials and machinery. |
